Hi folks, I hope you’re well and getting into the festive spirit.
Just wanted to let you all know I changed the title of this publication from Comics Praxis to Creative Praxis.
Like many of us, I write/create in multiple formats beyond comics and wanted to make sure the lessons I’m learning and discussing in this newsletter are more broadly applicable to all creators - no matter what format you’re working in.
It’s taken me some time to figure out what this publication is actually about, so I appreciate you sticking with me through the minor changes in direction and focus.
As always, thanks for reading and I hope you’re enjoying this publication!
I briefly summarized three papers that focused on key elements to include in your Kickstarter story section. My most interesting takeaway from this post was about tone - be positive about your project, but not too positive. Being too positive had a negative effect on campaign outcomes, likely because it turned people off.
I next explored the notion of trust in the Kickstarter ecosystem, and summarized some recent work about how high-profile fake campaigns have a negative impact on everyone else. The takeaway from this: make sure you fulfill your campaigns! Your campaign does have an impact on other people’s campaigns, and the system is only as strong as its weakest link.
It turns out that it’s not just tone that’s important! The actual words you use on the page can also play an impact in the success or not of your campaign. Am I trying to sell you on the idea there’s a magic incantation that will get your project funded? Not quite - although if you become a paid subscriber, I may tell you otherwise ;)
This story highlighted some semantics to avoid when creating your campaign page, although it did suggest ways to positively reinforce your story and potentially attract more backers.
Obviously, it’s not just words that matter, it’s how you put them together into sentences. That’s why writing is so magical - the possibilities and combinations are vast, although not all are effective. Some recent work suggests simple language works best - even if you have to write a lot!
Which of these was your favourite? As always, let me know.
